The
wet, windy and murky weather
could not disguise or dampen
the good spirits of the
large crowd which gathered
on Millennium Bank Holiday
to witness the unveiling
of the new Village Sign. Designed and
made by craftsman Roy Flewin
in sapele and oak the sign
is a composition of various
parts and elements of our
village.
The scenes, carved in
relief, have been brought
to life by the brush
of artist Terry Jeffrey.
The oak trunk carries
a distinctive carved
mark which is based on
the Millennium Hallmark
. The sign was erected
on a particularly cold
and wet day in December
by Ron Long and his Baytree
Boys (not to be confused
with the Baywatch Girls!).
This was done in good
spirit despite the great
weight of the sign, the
slippery conditions and
the presence of it's
anxious creator.
Following a short announcement
by Harold Sant on behalf
of the Dedham Village
Association in which
he thanked the participants
and the sponsors Dedham
Parish Council, Colchester
Borough Council, the
sign was unveiled jointly
by our oldest inhabitant
Major Dick Green (96)
and the youngest Dedham
pupil at Primary School,
Sarah Richardson.

Our
Vicar then gave the following
blessing:
May this village
sign,
made by the combined skills
of a local craftsman and artist
be an enduring mark of this new century.
May it be a reassurance to
the stranger,
a welcome to familiar visitors
and a cause for enjoyment
by the residents of this community
and by all who pass by:
In the name of Jesus Christ
our Lord
Amen
A manuscript copy of this prayer
was presented to Roy and Terry,
to the Dedham Village Association
and to the Parish Council.

The formalities were followed by the announcement
that barbecue food and celbratory drinks
were available in the nearby car park,
through the generousity of the local businessmen
Tony Clark and Del Bowers. These provisions
were demolished with gusto - and nobody
in the crowd seemed to mind the rain which
continued to fall.
