Now successfully installed in Dedham Parish Church, The Ascension, the most important religious work by the artist John Constable, sits well in its new elevated position on the south wall. Surrounded by commemorative plaques ranging from the gothic to the neo-classical, the painting appears to be part of the evolution of the church building, a happy addition which adds yet more drama and interest to the already exciting interior.

It feels timeless, although it has an element of the baroque, particularly with the dramatic clouds, and can only enhance the lustrous and colourful adornment already evident in the building. It attracts the eye of the visitor immediately upon arrival at the north door, a charismatic and bold focal point.

The satisfying progress to date, coming after the painting's somewhat chequered history, has been effected by a great deal of effort and commitment on the part of many people. The pains-taking restoration and conservation of the painting was completed at the Hamilton Kerr Institute in Cambridge. The frame has also been restored by Jock Hopson. The lighting and security in the church required careful con-sideration and appropriate systems are now in place.

The Trustees of the Constable Trust are delighted that so many grant-giving trusts and generous individuals felt able to help in raising money for the cons-ervation, installation and purchase of this important work. A huge thank you to all who have contributed so far.

There remains, however, a shortfall of £15,000 to complete the purchase of the painting in order to save it for the public and keep it in the area for which it was meant.
